Weather by Season — What to Pack
Foggy spring, rainy summer, the classic autumn sea of clouds, snowy winter — and what to pack for each.
Spring (Mar–May)
Mild (10–20°C), foggy mornings, fresh green. Rain gear is useful. Shoulder season — fewer crowds, lower prices.
Summer (Jun–Aug)
Hot and humid in town (28–35°C), cooler on the peaks. Rainy spells, sea of clouds more likely after rain. Peak season: holidays and July–August weekends are busy.
Autumn (Sep–Nov)
The best window overall: clear skies, crisp air, 15–25°C. Oct–Nov is the classic sea-of-clouds season. Golden-red leaves in the forest park.
Winter (Dec–Feb)
Cold (0–8°C, peaks below zero), occasional snow makes the quartz peaks stunning and quiet. January is the emptiest month — great for photography, bring thermal layers and grip shoes.
What to pack
- Layers are the answer all year — peaks are 8–12°C cooler than town.
- Comfortable walking shoes; winter adds ice and the 999 steps at Tianmen.
- Light rain jacket spring to autumn.
- Sun hat and sunscreen on clear days.
